It’s the 29th February today, also known as Bachelor Day. Every four years, women are encouraged to turn it all around and pop the question to the man in her life. And why not!
The idea stems from St Brigid of Kildare who asked permission from the patron Saint of Ireland to allow women to propose on 29th February as she was tired of single women moaning about men being to ‘too shy’ to ask themselves and ever since, strong women have been taking charge and asking their man to marry them on this date every four years.
But the change in tradition doesn’t have to stop there. There are plenty of traditions surrounding weddings that most people partake without question. Not only do women traditionally wait for men to propose, but many couples continue to opt for traditional white weddings at local churches and many women still take their husband’s name. It is still widely viewed as ‘unlucky’ for the groom to see his bride before the ceremony and speeches at wedding breakfasts are often only made by the men even in these modern times.
Why not turn everything on its head and do whatever truly reflects you as a couple? Ladies, do you wear the trousers in your relationship? Take charge! Propose to him today and stop dropping subtle hints or you’ll have to wait another four years!
Do you hate overly formal, stuffy events? Or dislike being round lots of people? Perhaps consider making your wedding a bit more relaxed and intimate with a small guest list. Destination weddings are becoming ever popular for couples who are looking for something a little bit different to the norm. You can even incorporate elements from other cultures into your wedding to make something really fun and interesting. Or perhaps you want to go way out there with your day and turn it into a pool party (great for destination weddings!) or a garden party instead. The choice is yours!
Whether you choose to go for a traditional wedding or you would prefer to plan something a bit different, make the most of your chance to propose today ladies or you’ll have to wait another four years to ask again!
