The wedding cake is such a massive part of any wedding. As Frank in Father of the Bride says, ‘the cake determines what kind of wedding that you'll end up having’, so no pressure, but it’s good to get it right!
There is almost an infinite amount of cake choices out there, and so whether you’re having an informal day or more of a formal do, there’s certainly a cake that fits the bill. Here are our favourite cakes to consider for 2016:
Naked Sponge
These cakes have become increasingly popular over the last few years. You can still retain the tiered and decorative elements but they give off a lot more of a relaxed, earthy vibe. With a naked wedding cake, you can be really specific on the final look as there are lots of elements to play around with. We’ve seen some gorgeous cakes with coloured sponge, for example, which fitted in with the wedding colour theme. Alternatively, you can have them decorated with fruit, or flowers or anything else you can think of. There really aren’t any rules!
Cheese Stack
Cheese wedding cakes are very on trend at the moment and we can easily see why; they look amazing and taste it too! Opt for this cake if you’d still like to have a wedding cake – to cut in front of your guests and for photographs – but aren’t bothered about the sweet element. One of the best things about this cake is that they’ll definitely not be any unwanted leftovers; just serve it with some baguettes and fruit later on in the evening reception and you’ll guests will love you for it.
Tiered Macarons
You certainly can’t cut a macaron cake but it sure does look gorgeous! They’re particularly effective when tiered up into a cone shape and they’re so versatile in terms of colour; have yours all in one colour to keep on theme or make a real feature out of it by having a rainbow shade design or different shades of one colour.
Minis
To go more towards alternative, why not have a wedding cake made out of lots of small dessert cakes? These could be cupcakes, donuts, pots of desserts, pavlovas... the list goes on! This would really work if the bride and groom had a particular dessert that they loved or a story behind one that they could weave into the wedding. More than anything, they’re just really fun, and after all, that’s what weddings are supposed to be!
